Visual Effects & 3d Modeling/Animation

Jason's experience with 3D applications began in 1994 with programs such as Specular Infini-D and Fractal Design's Poser.  As these program's have evolved and/or been replaced, so too has Jason's training evolved.  He is currently proficient in DAZ software including Hexagon, Bryce, and Studio Pro as well as open source applications such as Blender and Sketchup.  Like most 3D artists, Jason usually models in one application, then transfers his creations over to another for animation and rendering. Because of this, he has extensive knowledge of many different 2D and 3D file formats and their conversions.

Additionally, Jason is proficient in CGI, video, and graphics compositing programs such as Adobe AfterEffects CC and Apple Motion.

The examples below showcase more than just Jason's modeling and animation skills... they also demonstrate his philosophy that any visual effect should be driven by a good story as its foundation, which in turn drives proper technique guiding its technology use and development.

Experiments in Dynamic Range...

Jason also has an expertise with hacking Canon DSLR cameras using MagicLantern firmware to get them to perform at their full potential beyond their distributed factory settings. Recently, he has also experimented with creating his own flat picture styles for the Canon Rebel T3i, maximizing the recorded dynamic range off the Canon CMOS sensor into .jpg stills and H.264 .mov files.  This results in a recorded image that can be better color-graded in post, reclaiming dramatic contrast while also preserving detail in the highlights and shadows. The results of Jason's flat recording curve experiments can be viewed in the images showcased at the right, bottom right, and bottom of this paragraph.
